The summit is very cold before the sun comes up, even though the island below is tropical. Here is what the official sources say about rain, cloud and cold, and how to dress for the dark climb.

What the sources can and cannot tell you

Mount Batur weather has an official description but no official thermometer reading for the summit. The Batur Global Geopark says the area around the lake has a tropical climate with two seasons: a rainy season brought by the West Monsoon winds and a dry season brought by the East Monsoon winds.4 It also gives an average annual relative humidity of 87.67%, which is high, and a lake water temperature of 22.8°C to 26.6°C.5

That water temperature is the lake's, not the air's, and no source we read gives the temperature at the top of Mount Batur in degrees. Indonesia.travel says only that the summit is very cold before the sun fully emerges and that Kintamani is much colder than coastal Bali.1,6 We stay with those words rather than invent a number, and we treat any exact figure you see elsewhere as a guess unless it names a station.

What we can build from this is a plan. You will leave a warm coast in the small hours, climb into thinner and cooler air, and then stand still on a rim while the light arrives. The cold is therefore about standing still, not walking, and the right gear is whatever lets you add layers at the top without being weighed down on the way up.

Our suggestions, built on the clothing advice that Indonesia.travel and the listings give.1,10

Rain, cloud and the view you came for

The rainy season, per the geopark, begins in December and lasts until May, and a year brings 1,838.60 mm of rain on average.2 The same page notes that in December 2010 rainfall in the Kintamani area exceeded 500 mm, so a single wet month can be a large share of a normal year.2 Heavy rain does not cancel every morning, but it can turn loose ground slick and the view to white.

Indonesia.travel gives May to September, the dry season, for the clearest panoramas of the mountain and the lake, and recommends July and August for sunrise because the weather is steady enough for hiking.3,9 It also describes a sea of clouds over the caldera at sunrise, which is a view that depends on cloud as much as on clear sky.8 A cloudy morning is not a failed morning, though it can be a different one.

Operators plan for weather. One listing for a nearby hike says the activity operates rain or shine and that the itinerary may change for safety if needed. The practical rule is to pack for rain whenever the forecast is uncertain and to accept your guide's call on the day, because the person who has walked the trail all week knows how the ground is.

How cold the top really feels

Indonesia.travel's advice is blunt: wear a thick jacket, because temperatures at the summit are very cold before the sun fully emerges.1 The word to note is before. The cold belongs to the dark hour at the top, when you have stopped climbing and your sweat is cooling, and it fades as the sun clears the horizon.

That is why the layers matter more than any single item. A listing for a nearby hike tells guests to bring a warm jacket for the cool early morning, and another asks for warm clothing and a moderate-to-challenging effort, which together describe a body that is hot on the way up and cold on the way down. Both ends of that range need to be comfortable.

Do not judge by the coast. Indonesia.travel's tip for the rim is to bring warm clothing because temperatures are much colder than in coastal Bali, and its tip for the hike is to wear warm layers and bring water and snacks.6,10 If the weather in your beach town is hot and humid, that is exactly the weather you will leave behind in the car.

What to wear, layer by layer

What to wear for the Mount Batur trek comes down to one idea, layers. Start with a light base layer that you do not mind sweating into, and add a warm mid layer for the top. Then carry a thick jacket, as Indonesia.travel advises, in your pack for the climb and put it on at the summit before you cool down.1 A thin windproof shell on top of that handles both wind on the rim and an unexpected shower, and it weighs almost nothing.

Feet decide whether you enjoy the day. One listing asks for sturdy shoes and a warm jacket, another for comfortable walking shoes and warm clothing, and a sunset trek for proper walking or trekking shoes, sunglasses and sunscreen lotion. The ground is volcanic and loose, so choose shoes with grip and a closed toe over sandals, however warm you feel in the hotel lobby.

Add the small things that do the most. A hat or a buff keeps heat in, thin gloves help on the cold rim, and a headlamp frees your hands in the dark if your guide's light is not enough. Because the site tour notes that some areas on the mountain are dark, a light of your own is cheap insurance. Sunglasses come out once the sun is up.

What to carry besides clothes

Carry less than you think. Indonesia.travel suggests a camera and a light breakfast, and its tip for the hike adds water and snacks.1,10 The site tour's title includes breakfast, so the extra snacks are for the walk, not the meal. A small backpack, a refillable bottle and a phone with a full charge cover most of what a night climb needs.

Keep small notes of cash in a pocket. Indonesia.travel says many local stalls and fee posts in Kintamani accept cash only, and a tip for a guide or driver is easier to give in notes.11 If your pack zips shut, keep it zipped: the site tour warns that wild monkeys live on Mount Batur and must not be touched, and an open bag is an invitation.

Leave behind what you will not use. A towel, a change of clothes and a spare layer can stay in the car or at the lounge, where showers are limited and first come, first served on the site tour. If a stop at a waterfall is part of your listing, one nearby combo asks for swimwear and a towel, so read what your own booking says.

Dress codes around the mountain

Warm is not the only dress code. Bali's circular for foreign tourists mandates modest and appropriate clothing, especially at sacred sites, tourist attractions and public places.12 Mount Batur and the temple at its foot are sacred to the Balinese, so a morning that ends with a visit to a village or a temple is a morning where covered shoulders and knees matter.13

A listing for a cultural day around the lake says visitors must dress modestly when entering villages and temples, with shoulders and knees covered. The same listing tells guests to ask the guide before photographing sacred areas. Both pieces of advice cost nothing and avoid awkward moments.

In practice, pack long trousers or a lightweight wrap and a top with sleeves, and you will meet both the cold and the code with the same clothes. If your plans include the Kintamani rim or a temple after the climb, say so to your guide, who will know what is expected on that day.
