The answer in one line
The Mount Batur trek on the site tour picks up in Ubud, Kuta, Canggu and four other south Bali areas, with a car ride listed at 2 hours.
Pickup in brief
Three taps to your ride
Mount Batur is a drive away from every base in south Bali. Here is how pickups work from Ubud, Kuta, Canggu and farther out, with the ride times and the extra charges the listings state.
The compact version
A Mount Batur trip from Ubud or the coast is mostly a drive. Indonesia.travel places the mountain in Kintamani, about 2 hours from North Bali's main coastal areas and Denpasar, and says most people join a guided hike with hotel pickup.1 That one sentence explains why the listings look the way they do: the transfer is built in, and the pickup point decides how early your night ends.
The site tour's listing puts the car ride at 2 hours and offers pickup from Ubud, Sanur, Denpasar, Kuta, Canggu, Nusa Dua and Jimbaran. Other listings list their own areas, and the overlaps are large, so a hotel in Ubud or between Canggu and Sanur is likely to fall inside at least one pickup area.
Scale helps. The geopark puts Trunyan, on the far shore of Lake Batur, about 70 km from Denpasar, and Kintamani sits on the nearer southwest ridge of the caldera.2,3 You are not crossing the island, but you are climbing out of the lowlands onto a cool rim, and the road takes its time. Expect the transfer to be the longest block of the day after the walk itself, and plan your sleep around it rather than hoping to catch up afterwards.

Ubud sits closest to the mountain of the main bases, and the listings show it. A shuttle hike lists a car ride of 1.5 hours and gives Ubud as one of its meeting points, alongside Canggu and a meeting point near Mount Batur. The site tour also names Ubud among its pickup areas, and lists Ubud as a drop-off.
The catch is the clock. One listing picks up around 2:30 AM in Ubud, the latest of its pickup times, against around 1:30 AM in South Bali and around 2:00 AM in the Sanur and Denpasar area. That is a gentler start than from the coast, but it is still the middle of the night, and a meeting point is not a hotel door, so ask your operator which one applies to you.
Drop-offs make the return easy. The shuttle hike lists Ubud, Lapangan Astina Ubud and Tegalalang among its drop-off places, as well as Canggu and Kintamani. If your afternoon is in the rice terraces or a spa, you can end the morning close to it and sleep through the last stretch of the ride. Tell the driver your hotel's name before you doze off, so the final turn is not a guess at the end of a long night.
The pickup clock
Mount Batur sunrise trekking from Kuta is a classic booking, and the south coast is where the longest pickup rounds start. The site tour lists Kuta, Canggu, Sanur, Nusa Dua, Jimbaran and Denpasar, and a long guided day lists Seminyak, Sanur, Legian, Canggu, Kerobokan, Kuta and Jimbaran with a car ride of 1 hour in each direction. Differences in the stated ride come from where each listing counts the start, so judge them by the clock, not by the kilometers.
Pickup times follow the geography. One listing collects around 1:30 AM in South Bali, so a hotel in Kuta, Legian or Seminyak is at the sleepy end of the schedule, while another starts hotel pickup from 1:00 AM depending on the hotel. A sunset trek lists pickup 1 to 1.5 hours before the starting time with the exact moment confirmed by the operator.
Canggu is covered, with a twist. The site tour lists it as a pickup area, and the shuttle hike treats Canggu as a meeting point with its own drop-off at Central Parkir Canggu. Whichever you pick, check whether the listing collects you at your hotel or asks you to meet near it, because the walk to a meeting point comes out of your sleep.

Extra per car
Farther areas are possible but cost extra. On the site tour, pickup from Uluwatu, Sidemen or Candidasa adds $15 per car, and pickup from North Bali, Lovina or Amed adds $25 per car. The charge is per car, so a group splits it and a solo traveler pays all of it.
Other listings price the same trouble differently. One charges IDR 100k per person for an Uluwatu pickup, paid to the driver. A private Kintamani day charges 150,000 per car for Nusa Dua and Uluwatu pickups and says it does not pick up in Karangasem, Singaraja or Tabanan. Read the surcharge line before you book, since it can sit in the small print.
If you are staying far from the south, one alternative is to sleep closer to the mountain instead. A drop-off in Kintamani is listed on the site tour, which suits anyone who has booked a room in the highlands, and Indonesia.travel notes that Kintamani is much colder than coastal Bali.5 Pack for that change as well as for the climb, because a coat that feels excessive in a beach town is exactly right on the rim before dawn.

Set 4 choices next to each other
Treat the ride as part of the rest you need. The site tour's car ride is 2 hours, the shuttle hike's is 1.5 hours, and a long guided day lists 1 hour each way. The numbers are modest on paper and long at 2 AM, so sit by a window, keep a light layer on, and do not plan to read.
On the way back the listings let you choose where to end. The site tour lists drop-offs in Denpasar, Ubud, Kuta, Bangli Regency, Badung Regency and Kintamani. It also says shower facilities are limited, so a hotel shower is the safer plan if your next stop has any kind of schedule.
If you are leaving Bali the same day, say so when you book. The listed duration of 5 to 10 hours depends on the start time, so a flight in the afternoon needs a tight start slot and a drop-off close to the airport side of the island, not a casual rest day.
Mount Batur is located in Kintamani, about 2 hours from North Bali's main coastal areas and Denpasar. Most people join a guided hike with hotel pickup.
Ahead of booking
There is no best base, only the one that suits your trip. Ubud trades a shorter ride for a meeting point on some listings, the south coast trades an earlier pickup for hotel-door service on others, and a night in the highlands removes the ride and adds the cold.5 None of these is wrong; they just move the discomfort around.
Match the base to the rest of your plans. If your days are spent in the rice terraces and the arts, Ubud keeps the trek close; if your days are on the beach, a south-coast pickup avoids a long return; if you want to hike more than once, a stay in Kintamani saves the two-hour transfer each time.1
Then pick the listing that actually covers your hotel. The table and the planner on this page narrow it down in a minute, and the booking page confirms the last detail. Ask the operator for the pickup time in writing, and set an alarm for a quarter of an hour before it.
